Archelaus transferred the capital of the Kingdom of Macedonia from Aiges to Pella. The city thrived during the period of the successors of Alexander the Great who brought untold treasures from Asia. During the first period of the excavations, Agora, the palaces, the sanctuaries, the cemeteries and the plantations were discovered.
From Pella, with our visitor, we take the national road towards Edessa. In a distance of 6 km from Naoussa, we find a village named Kopanos. There we find the school of Aristotle where Alexander the Great was taught. We also find the Mieza theatre whose capacity is calculated at 1,500 spectators.
Vergina, which is 28 km from Kopanos, became worldwide known due to the discovery of the ancient city of Aiges, which was the old capital of the Macedonian state. There, the tomb of Philip B’, father of Alexander the Great, is quite distinctive. Apart from that, the ancient buildings of the city of Aiges, the Macedonian Palace as well as a prehistoric cemetery, have also been discovered.
