Athos Peninsula is the easternmost and the roughest of the three individual parallel peninsulas (Kassandra or Pallini, Longos or Sithonia – central and Athos or Agio Oros) that constitute the Peninsula of Chalkidiki.
According to a Russian tradition it seems that Mother of Jesus herself appeared in the region and as a result the residents embraced Christianity. Specifically, Holly Mother and Evangelist John, on their way to Cyprus in order to visit Lazarus, sailed to Athos due to a sea storm and they disembarked on the coast where today we find the Holy Monastery of Ivira. There, Mother of Jesus admired the place and a voice from Heaven was heard which was saying “From now on, this place is yours. Orchard, heaven and salvation harbour for those who want to be saved”. So, Agio Oros was established to be called “Property and orchard of Holy Mary”. Visiting Agio Oros is an experience of a lifetime for most visitors. Almost everyone, upon their return back home promise themselves that they will return sometime in the future. Agio Oros consists of 20 Holy Monasteries, of which 17 are Greek, one is Russian, one is Serbian and one is Bulgarian.
