In the north-western part of Thessaly, above Kalambaka, at a height of 400 m, proud and imposing, rise the eerie, enormous and dark rocks of Meteora, full of fossil shells - a unique geological phenomenon. In this wild and inaccessible, majestic landscape, between heaven and earth, the second most important monastic complex of Greece, after Agio Oros, spreads.
Of the twenty-four monasteries that have existed historically, only six (St. Nickolas Rest, Transformation of the Savior or Grand Meteor, Varlaam, Roussanou, Holy Trinity and St. Stefanos) are currently operating, which, being excellently organized and renovated with respect to the tradition for six hundred and more years, continue unconditionally, without cessation and deviations, a genuine and rigorous testimony of the Orthodox monasticism. The holy stone city of Meteora has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1988. Take with us a pilgrimage to the meteoric monasteries on the windswept rocks, a wandering in their lofty history.
